What joy there is in watching wood burn in a fireplace on a cold winter evening! I was enjoying a fireiplace until I asked someone to clean the chimney. He noticed that the fireplace was not up to code and removed it. I misss the fireplace, but not the smoke that would settle around the house on a windless evenings.

So thankful for the memories of younger days. Yes, it was work but oh how we enjoyed the final products…real, chunky applesauce, green beans and tomatoes our hands touched, drying snow dampened clothes by the fire. I do love autumn and remember when we lived under towering oaks…I loved cruising up the drive smelling the crunching leaves and watching them swirl in a tornado behind the car. Even the leaves required chores…raking and gathering into rows along the grounds. I still enjoy fall, but I no longer preserve my vegetables, the garden going to seed, and no trees for me to be concerned with raking or clearing gutters…or stacking wood. At least I still live in these mountains and can watch autumn creep in with nippy mornings….for now.
