We are camping at Devil's Backbone this weekend - think we'll stop by the Hawk Watch on Saturday as it's 20 minutes away. We got into birding this summer when in Asheville. I found somebody on AirBnB offering 2 hour guided sessions at the Asheville Bird Sanctuary. I assumed we were getting a retired bird enthusiast. Instead it was a professional - a young guy that works for a company in Asheville that leads bird tours around the world. He was telling us about his trip to Cuba, the Amazon, etc. I learned more in that 2 hours than I have in any two hour period since maybe when we first became parents. Se saw or heard 30 something species of birds that morning too.
Dragonfly migration was pretty darn amazing too.
29,000 hawks; that is incredible!
