randall i think it is as much self knowledge through language as of things as material objects or rediscoveries of mere fact in 2nd and 3rd readings of the same book
A thought or two from an "anti-librarian" -- Since you've already toted all these books on the Big Move, I suggest that you keep 'em. I purged, with only a few regrets, at least half of my library before moving to Floyd, but am happily (albeit slowly) rebuilding my own "anti-library." Books, read or unread, make for superb interior decoration. Far more attractive than most things that can adorn walls, plus they provide the ever-present opportunity of taking an adventure simply by taking them off the shelf and opening them.
I have not heard this term, but my late husband and I were avid book collectors. We were a military family. Early on, our book case consisted of 6 cinder blocks and boards ( before our collection quietly expanded). During one move, all books, boards and blocks were lost. I filed the paperwork. Shortly after that, the mail carrier struggled to the apartment with a box, which I could barely lift. This delivery continued daily for a week. Finally, he asked, “Lady, what’s in these boxes….bricks?” I just could not tell him…as he delivered my last two cinder blocks.

Notice that according to these quotations, books offer only "knowledge." So much for fiction, poetry, plays, essays, and my job as an English teacher.
