Sociopolitically that word "land" is dangerous. Because tribes of all stripes--on cheek and brain--tend to regard it as the Sacred Ours. Fatherland, Motherland, This Land... It can brew high-alcohol juice solis.
In Floyd County, Virginia, you and I benefited from an extreme closeness to abundant and beautiful land. So for us the word resonates with unusual power. After reading "Earth" a few minutes ago, I wondered about ethics: Before jumping in the car and driving up I-77 toward our house on the Blue Ridge Plateau, should I leave a note for my wife? RW
