I learned recently about a wonder-drug for weight loss that really works, but was banned for that purpose in 1938. (Would you believe through Internet sources it can still be had for $3 a pill and the risk is all yours. Don’t say you weren’t WARMED! [sic]
The active ingredient is DNP—a close relative of TNT— that works as a “mitochondrial uncoupling agent.” This results in molecules that would have produced cellular energy for things like fat conversion generate waste heat instead. The down-side is that there is a remote chance your body core temp could exceed 109 degrees. Your brain in a frying pan.
“As far as I know, DNP is the only substance to be banned by both the FDA and the Department of Homeland Security for unrelated reasons.” from the link below.
There is more to this story, including more recent attempts to harness mitochondrial burn rate for legit medical reasons. You can read the source article: Shilling for Big Mitochondria.
But I listened to it before I read it. And maybe that’s the main take-away from this short post:
►You can convert most any web page into very listenable spoken text and save those “to listen” articles to a browser or some podcast apps to consume when you want. I find it quite useful, you might too!
Check out AUDIOBLOGS. or listen to this article at THIS LINK. (I think this will work, and I’m sure you’ll let me know if it doesn’t!) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Interesting. I have had TWO readers WARN ME that maybe I was hacked. Did I really post this about diet pills? Well yes, not advocating for them or in need of them myself, but interested in the chemistry, the history of use, the amazing potential risk, and the potential future use of other "mitochondrial redirecting" for legitimate research and health purposes.
So YEAH. Guilty as charged. And you should know by now that the newsletter is like a box 'o chocolates. You never know WHAT you're gonna get!

What a goofy thing to investigate! It sounds scientifically interesting, but I don’t think I will spend any time on it.
