Thanks for telling me this. I just found an image-and-links archive from your query some months ago as you prepared for this trip. It be windy at Grayson Highlands but beautiful. That is for me a "place of power" as Castaneda called such energies. Maybe you will feel it too (but with ears and fingers bundled up good!)
We were just in the Canaan Valley last month, and I was surprised to find that Davis, and Thomas, WV, neighboring towns of about 500 people, both had strong hippie vibes. I saw a t-shirt that said Davis WV, the highest town in WV, and I googled it because I wasn't sure what definition of high was in play! They were talking altitude, but I suspect both may apply.
(Black Mountain) is being loved, if not to death, at least to a mild indigestion. Come on Fred, you know I read your post early in the morning while drinking coffee. Almost lost it.
I have long wanted to go there - and now - I still do.
I will be staying in Damascus Virginia for two nights next week and spending time in Grayson Highlands State Park. I am really looking forward to it.

We have a T-shirt in the Republic of Floyd that says "Floyd Virginia. Elevation 2600 feet. Sometimes higher."
I have been in Davis and Thomas both, and yes, they have the funky going. It felt comfortable in scale and authenticity.

Sorry 'bout that. But spewed coffee is a sign of a healthy mind; but maybe unhealthy early morning reading. Dunno. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
