My uncles family consisted of 5 children. In their kitchen was one of the old Formica topped tables with those double tubular legs. When they sold that table, they tipped it to move it out…to the surprise of these kiddos, years of tiny dehydrated peas rolled from the recesses of those tubular legs, finally telling of how bravely they faced peas for dinner.

Ode to Asparagus

Upon thy emerald stalk so bright, A tender gift of spring's delight. With whispers crisp in dawn’s embrace, A fleeting joy, a fleeting taste.

Through butter’s kiss or fire’s embrace, Thy fragrance lifts, thy soul takes place. From gardens fair to feasts divine, A simple stalk, yet so refined.

In golden fields thy spears arise, A gentle nod to nature’s ties. Oh, cherished green, thy time is brief, Yet thou dost grace both king and thief.
