My uncles family consisted of 5 children. In their kitchen was one of the old Formica topped tables with those double tubular legs. When they sold that table, they tipped it to move it out…to the surprise of these kiddos, years of tiny dehydrated peas rolled from the recesses of those tubular legs, finally telling of how bravely they faced peas for dinner.
Upon thy emerald stalk so bright, A tender gift of spring's delight. With whispers crisp in dawn’s embrace, A fleeting joy, a fleeting taste.
Through butter’s kiss or fire’s embrace, Thy fragrance lifts, thy soul takes place. From gardens fair to feasts divine, A simple stalk, yet so refined.
In golden fields thy spears arise, A gentle nod to nature’s ties. Oh, cherished green, thy time is brief, Yet thou dost grace both king and thief.
OMG - I am sitting here visualizing the asparagus in the cans - yuk. Bur fresh asparagus is such a different vegetable - AND I so enjoyed your writing and language. Thanks for the brief visit down memory lane!!!
My children still talk about the slimy asparagus I served them as kids. I had never had any fresh asparagus, as apparently neither had my mother. Maybe my grandmother didn’t like it. But when I discovered how much better the fresh asparagus was, it quickly became my favorite vegetable.

Ode to Asparagus

And yeah, I'm certain my early dislike of veggies was mostly due to the fact they were all procured in cans from the Air Force Commissary.
Can I share a vegetables for dinner origin story?
