After following you since 2003, with all the posts about your wood: collecting, chopping, burning, etc., I am very happy for you to have that big part of your life back!

I'd like to think (in fact we are gambling lots of money that) I will remain able bodied long enough to get some physical and emotional payback from this investment. Time will come when I will only burn wood I have never seen before and paid another to cut and split. For a while, though, I hope to help the wood stacks grow and have the satisfaction of taking back a small bit of our independence before life, er, goes up in smoke.

Question: Why does the heating unit need to be so far from the house?

The recommendation is not closer than 30 feet and we are at about 35. I guess there could somehow be a risk of a stray spark when the fire door is open; and there is some smoke when first firing up new fire (and much less when coals are established) although our stove is on the southeast side of the house, and prevailing winds are from the north-west so I don't expect to be bothered by smoke.

OK, that makes sense. It also makes for a long trek during stormy weather. A tradeoff, I suppose.

If I get to where a 30 foot trek is out of my reach, then it is SYSTEM FAIL and we are victims of the heat pump again. Roll with the punches. Or human-frame Entropy. Whichever comes first.
