An interesting observation, but I would hope that Mr. Levy would provide more information about how the fields are determined. Wired magazine seems to be home for science popularizers who are light on details.

Your Goose Creek Spiderweb photos were always some of my favorites!

Your information about static electricity is amazing.

Fred, I enjoyed the static electricity article. The mention of bees brought back memories of a Harvard class I took on communications back in the sixties. Someone had just figured out that bees would send out scouts and the scouts could give directions if I remember correctly which I sometime don't do these days. Hope you are well, the world of blogging has changed but I still have my Typepad View from the Mountain account- 20 years last month. Newspapers have changed since Roanoke Times listed us as bloggers. We're living in Mocksville, NC now which is home turf for me. There is even a road, Styers Ferry Rd. named after my maternal great grandfather who ran the ferry across the Yadkin River. Hope you have a great holiday season.

I had regrets after writing this critical comment, and should have expressed appreciation for another chance to enjoy Fred's photos. Having a physics background, I am concerned about the dumbing down of science writing as exemplified by Levy's article in Wired. After some investigation on the subject, I found an article by Levy in Quanta magazine which must have been rewritten in a more popular style to get accepted by Wired--https://www.quantamagazine.org/the-hidden-world-of-electrostatic-ecology-20240930/ Example--no embedded twitter videos of a guy eating bugs. I subscribe to Wired, but will now devote more attention to Quanta.

I almost replied before to your comment, to suggest some form of your conclusion. And yes Quanta is less dumbed down, even while the prevailing low level of science literacy makes it difficult to spread knowledge using all the facts if the jargon is off-putting. I am sure I am guilty of glossing over deeper truths due to my own superficial understanding. I wade in without all the facts but more than enough awe and delight in sharing what bits I know.
