You are probably thinking of saddle-back caterpillars. Horn worms don't sting--even though they have that wicked looking spine a one end. I have been strung by saddle-backs in the corn. Yep, that is not something you want to repeat.

I got stung by a tomato horn worm once - worst pain imaginable. It made me swear off growing tomatoes for a long time.
