Two years ago today—December 21, 2020 was our first winter anywhere in Floyd other than Goose Creek, and we are paying attention. Look. Sunset just beyond the shortest day is just south of Panther Knob. And every day from now into July, it will move north, even as the trees leaf out and obscure the sun’s path all the way to the ridge tops.
I remember this day well. Mom was here, witnessing her first blizzard and first White Christmas. You don’t see this stuff in Ala-freakin-bama where she lived until the mid-twenty-teens. She was so happy to be “snowed in” and able to stay near the view without guilt for a little longer than we had planned.
Mom is gone now, and I will spend my first Christmas without her. Finding this image brings back such warm memories of her endless stories of Christmases during the “good years.” She never tired of telling stories.
And so you see I have a congenital affliction that compels me, too, to tell them. I look forward to finding more to share in 2023. Please join me, and bring friends!
Happy holidays, Fred. A big storm is headed for the eastern Ontario highlands, and we are battening down the hatches! It will be a white Christmas and then some.
you are kind. And long-suffering. \{ ; > ))
I am glad you inherited storytelling from your mom.
Thank you for sharing lovely pics and good memories.
