I started writing such that total strangers could read over my shoulder in 2002 as a way of telling myself—and those who cared to know—both the source and the path of my own roots, purpose and hopes.
I have recently started checking in on Fragments after a hiatus of many years. I just bought your book "Slow Road Home" and am enjoying your commentaries on living a simpler life in the countryside. I grew up in Seattle and appreciated opportunities to visit nearby trails in the mountains. But now when I return to Seattle, the outdoor opportunities are more difficult to realize. Heavy traffic makes travel difficult, and the city is filled with homeless people and open drug use. There is a sense of despair, which is relieved upon returning to the New River Valley. I give thanks every day for living here.
I remember the early days very well. Like a ham radio operator tapping Morse code from the hinterlands. Your stories and photos were captivating- leading to family vacations in the area and ultimately residing in the NRV.
Still tapping. Anyone? Anyone? Come back....Hello?
So here we are on the back side, tapping the brakes to slow it down. Writing at least allows a travelog on the way to the destination. Glad to have you along, all along.

I have always enjoyed both places, Fred, and they compliment each other perfectly!
Cate, I'm so happy to have you along for the ride. We aren't done YET!
