It really looks like an Andean or Mexican Royal Oak to me. But those grow at really high altitudes, generally, and in very wet areas. Cloud forests, for instance. Curioser and curioser!

I looked up Shingle Oak in the Flora of Virginia and was surprised that it is native to the state. I have never seen one. It prefers wet areasl
